We were looking for an authentic ryokan experience, especially food and onsen baths, and Senkei gave us more than we could imagine. We had two breakfasts and two dinners, kaiseki style, each meal served in our rooms, and presented by our server/host, Taiko, who described each dish. Each dish was its own work of art, on gorgeous dishware. We have a fairly experienced and adventurous palate for Japanese traditional food so appreciated the variety, with many items never before tasted. It was very plentiful, with soup, array of pickled items, seafood, hotpot dish, and more. We felt like we were in heaven savoring each dish in a beautiful tatami room with a view of the mountains and large cherry blossom tree in front of the hotel. The room itself was a unique traditional tatami suite called Youra, one of several special suites in the ryokan. It had a dining area with both tatami style table as well as a western style dining set, and separate alcove with futon on a platform, and bath area with deep bathtub with onsen hot water, and bidet and spacious vanity counter. The path to the suite is quite awesome, not a usual hotel structure, but built into a mountainside with waterfalls and gardens along the path. However an elevator is available also. The two public onsen, one an open airrooftop retreat, and another on the ground floor were both incredibly soothing and very special. We feel so lucky to have experienced the Hotel Senkei ryokans! It was a total immersion in the ryokan culture - culinary, aesthetics, and kind hospitality of all the staff. Note that the Hotel Senkei has two other hotels in its group, a business hotel and another hotel complex, all under its Senkei name, and they are a different type of lodging, more a typical hotel vs ryokan. From our arrival to departure, everything felt perfect and we felt like VIPs and very cared for.

Our plans for our visit to Hakone and the nearby hot springs noted for the "black eggs", cooked in a sulfur hot springs was set askew by a snow storm/rain. We were therefore very grateful for the onsens (separate men and women) to warm up after, with waters from hot springs. We didn't have the meal plan reservations so I can't speak to the breakfast & dinner. The room was traditional Japanese, tatami mats, futons, low tables, but there were two "regular" chairs. Another rating mentioned issues with the room being cold, but ours had a modern wall ac/heater with remote and I was able to make it comfortable for my normally cold spouse. All in all a good time, just make sure to check out before 11, as that is when the last shuttle to the train station, about 800 m away, not an issue except it was raining. Not the Ryokan's fault, just two slow seniors. No problem.

Loved everything about Hotel Senkei in Hakone - we booked the Japanese room ryokan with tatami mats & futon & we felt like we were transported back to the 70s-80s of Japan. Excellent hospitality, super friendly helpful staff, we loved both the rooftop & indoor onsen facilities. Location was great - just 10-15min walk from Hakone station or the hotel provides a shuttle. We felt super relaxed & comfortable at Hotel Senkei - thank you!

Great outdoor onsen - just keep in mind that men and women are separated and can use it at different times. We used it in the evenings (women until 21.00 and men after 21.30) and it was nice. Went there almost alone all the time. Interesting and good experience in japanese style room. Calming river sound from outside. Overall its good value for money.

IMPORTANT: If the mixed reviews for this ryokan confuse you: Your experience will vary EXTREMELY depending on your chosen room plan, as there are multiple hotels listed here together. Incredible food! (Not for picky eaters though) Incredible service! Close to the station! (and shuttle service available) Onsen! Huge room!
